Where Epinio Helps Epinio abstracts away the complexity of Kubernetes so you can get back to writing code. Apps are launched with a single command, eliminating complex CD pipelines and YAML files. It’s like having your own PaaS solution that you can control! divider
The History of Epinio handshake Rancher Labs and SUSE Rancher Labs had been a pioneer in making Kubernetes accessible, and after they were acquired by SUSE in December 2020, SUSE recognized that managing clusters was only half the battle; the other half was enabling developers to actually use those clusters without becoming experts in Kubernetes YAML and infrastructure primitives. epinio The Birth of Epinio The problem Epinio sought to solve was the "steep learning curve" associated with Kubernetes. While Kubernetes had become the standard for container orchestration, the operational overhead for individual developers remained high.

Inspired by Cloud Foundry where a developer could simply write code, run one command, and the platform would handle the containerization, routing, and scaling, Epinio was designed to be the "opinionated" layer on top of Kubernetes. The goal was to hide the complexity of Kubernetes (YAML manifests, Ingress rules, and Pod specs) behind a simple interface, just as Cloud Foundry did for legacy infrastructure. The defining feature of Cloud Foundry was the 'cf push' command and SUSE wanted to bring that "Push" experience to Kubernetes with the 'epinio push’ command.
krumware Krumware Takes Over A major milestone in Epinio's history occurred between 2024 and 2025, when the project's stewardship was transferred from SUSE to Krumware. This transition was not a sudden abandonment by SUSE but a strategic realignment intended to place Epinio in the hands of an organization whose core business revolved around the developer experience and platform engineering.

The transfer of stewardship also brought a more structured approach to commercial support. While Epinio remains an open-source project under the Apache 2.0 license, Krumware introduced tiered support structures to assist organizations in deploying and operating the platform at scale.
rocket What's Next Epinio 1.14 is shaping up to be a major leap forward. The deployment experience has been completely reimagined, giving you more flexibility than ever— a redesigned app creation flow, the ability to walk away while your app deploys, and a powerful new pack-based buildpack lifecycle that opens the door to non-Paketo buildpacks. The entire UI has been transformed with the Trailhand design system, delivering a sleek new look across both the standalone interface and the Rancher Extension. Under the hood, significant performance improvements build on the gains from 1.13, with faster service bindings, smarter polling, and server-side search on the horizon. Infrastructure updates broaden buildpack compatibility and modernize the Helm chart, while a comprehensive documentation overhaul ensures everything is easy to find and up to date. Whether you're deploying your first app or managing dozens, 1.14 makes the experience faster, more flexible, and a whole lot smoother. Gets Epinio ready for accelerated feature development.
